Following a substantial renovation of the cottage as seen on ABC's Restoration Australia, we are able to provide high quality accommodation set in the context of historic buildings that date back to the 19th century. Gone are the chaff or straw mattresses replaced with luxurious king-size bed, paired with the makings for a hearty breakfast together with a local wine and cheese on arrival.
Our flexible two-night or three-night option attracts many guests who are on an extended road trip around McLaren Vale, the Barossa, Adelaide Hills or Kangaroo Island.
WHAT'S INCLUDED
Ensuring you have a wonderful experience, we provide a bottle of local wine and cheese for you on arrival as well as a ‘good’ breakfast of bacon, eggs, tomatoes, and toast during your stay.
We also can cater for dietary needs such as gluten-free or vegan if asked in advance.
This is as well as tea and Nespresso coffee available to you in the kitchenette.
Adjacent to the Picker’s Cottage is The Cook’s Cottage, so if you’re travelling with another couple, and want to stay close by but in your own space, look no further.
We also welcome your beloved dog (please advise this upon enquiry).
ABOUT THE COTTAGES
The Tatachilla Winery and it’s associated stables were established in 1887 over a square mile in the Tatachilla district of McLaren Vale.
Next to the stables was an existing cottage whose inhabitants became caterers to the itinerant workers who came to pick the grapes. Up to twenty-five men could be accommodated in bunk-house conditions and a chaff or straw mattress was provided for their bedding.
The men were also supplied with meals including a 'good' breakfast, a packed lunch of sandwiches and a piece of block cake or rock bun, and an evening meal at the picker's house.
